I found this link(click here) when searching for something on Google and was amazingly pleased at this. It talks about why should NITR(the best NIT in India- that's according to me and our Director) be upgraded to an IIT?
NITR fullfils all requirements for being an IIT(infact much better than other institutes). Our institute has an amazingly 650 acres land with fantastic infrastructure and all other things that an IIT should have. Only one disadvantage I see is the lack of an airport in the city(an occasionally functional air-strip is available though) but then even IIT Kharagpur dosen't have one.
Intially when RECs were being set-up(two RECs were being planned) and the contenders were Jamshedpur,Rourkela and Durgapur(The links point to respective NITs)and Rourkela was denied a REC. But after a visit to the city by the education minister of that time, they admitted that Rourkela should have a REC. And now its an established fact that NITR is much better than the other two.
Similarly,in this case also I want to say that NITR needs and deserves to be upgraded to an IIT- if not done so,it will again be a decision to be regretted. Though this decision matters the most to NITRians but then it also means a correct decision for India!

As far as area is concerned NITR has sufficient area to provide d facilities which IITs hv. When it comes to d no. of profs n phds then NITR really lacks in tht. It has slightly less no. of programs for students to pursue. It also lacks in no. of books available in d library. Giving an example-d library of IIT KANPUR has around 5 lakh books which is 10 times tht of books in NITR. Also there r some other factors also which need to be focused on. Such as lab facilities, computer centre(net facilities) etc. IITs not only mean d academic developement of a student, rather it means all-round developement of an individual. Hence 4 bcoming an IIT, co-curriculars of a particular college should also b looked upon. I cannot myself decide whether or not NITR should bcome an IIT,but i hv posted my views tht which areas should b looked upon while making NITR an IIT.
The discussion of 'which institute is better than the other' is a statistical pleasure for either the subject experts or the media guys.
This is a never ending race. It's a futile discussion to get into for anybody else - IMHO :-)
I have seen the transition of RECR into NITR n believe me more than any thing else it is simply the amount of funding that can make or wreck any NIT(or as a matter of fact IIT)..
All other thing like Brand name(NITR now also have a good brand name), faculty, infrastructure will follow soon after..one need not worry after that..even right now NITR offers UG course in 10 disciplines(more than IITG I guess)..
Infrastructure development is something which is purely realted to funding…when GOI decide to upgrade REC's to NIT's the funding improved tremendously n that explains the face lift that NITR got..so I guess instead of expecting the GOI to upgrade us to IIT, we can ask for similar funding:)..that i guess will solve the problem ..n the IITians need not get worried about the dilution of brand name of IIT;)
PS: Hey SID do the Director still talks about we belonging to the top 2% of the ppl born at our time :D
Pratik- Yes, there are things in which NITR is behind IITK. But just think about the funding(this point I just forgot to write about)... As far as net facilities you are talking about, I can believe that now NITR has the best net facilities(yes comparable to IITs and maybe even better than some).
Ashish- Yes, its true and I had decided not to write on this subject but so much of hype and nonsense around forced me to write. My next post will also be on this subject and I will show you that media doesnt unneccasrily hype up this things but this is all made by IITians themselves. Just wait for the next post! And BTW what is IMHO??
Srikant- I beleive that's true. But will the GOI increase funding to NITs without upgrading them to IITs? I mean they did so only when RECs were transformed to NITs- they could have kept the name unchanged and only have increased funding. I think it's all politics and bussiness in this field as well!
its severely unfair 2 say dat nit rourkela is better dan nit durgapur, wen its actually da opposite
Please, give me link to download XRumer 7.0!!!

Let's discuss about some current facts.I am a 1st year student in D section. Our Basic Electrical lecture and Basic Electronics lecture are so poor in teaching that they even can't complete a sentence. It's hard to understand what they are saying. But,they are very strict in attendance that it takes about 20-25 minutes to complete. So,there is no chance of proxy at all. Also, they are very strict in TA that they don't care how many students get failed.
I am just waiting if ther will be a strike agaist these lectures who ain't qualified as an NIT lecture.
